Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start transcribing?
Press your hotkey (default: Option + /) from any app. Speak, then press the hotkey again. Your transcribed text will appear at your cursor.
Do I need an internet connection?
Only for the initial model download during setup. After that, Push to Transcribe works fully offline. All transcription happens locally on your Mac.
Which Macs are supported?
Push to Transcribe requires a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4, or later) running macOS 16.0 (Tahoe) or later.
Which transcription engine should I use?
whisper.cpp offers the highest accuracy with AI-powered transcription. Apple Speech is ultra-fast and uses Apple's built-in speech recognition. Try both and see which fits your workflow.
The text isn't appearing at my cursor. What's wrong?
Push to Transcribe needs Accessibility permission to paste text. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and make sure Push to Transcribe is enabled. The onboarding flow will guide you through this.
Can I change the hotkey?
Yes. Open Push to Transcribe settings and go to the Settings tab. You can set any keyboard shortcut you prefer.
How do I use the menu bar recorder?
When recording, a live waveform appears in your Mac's menu bar. Left-click it to stop and transcribe. Right-click to cancel the recording.
What languages are supported?
whisper.cpp supports 100+ languages. Apple Speech supports the languages configured in your macOS settings. You can select your preferred language in the app settings.
Is my audio data private?
Absolutely. All audio processing happens locally on your Mac. No audio or text is ever sent to any server. Read our Privacy Policy for the full details.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple through the Mac App Store. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com to request a refund.
